A splint roll is designed with a thin, lightweight aluminum core that’s housed between an outer foam shell. Once folded into a curve, it becomes extremely strong and supportive, and is capable of stabilizing fractured or injured limbs. Also known as Sam splints as an homage to their inventor, Vietnam War trauma surgeon Dr. Sam Scheinberg, they’re compact, flexible and radiolucent, which means they’re transparent to x-rays so they don’t have to be removed during the x-ray process. These splints are also weatherproof, easily reusable and convenient to store or take with you on the go while camping or rock climbing. Here, we did some research and rounded up some splint rolls to add to your first aid kit. Each can be cut with regular household scissors to size.
