7 Summer Shoe Trends From Last Year I'm Still Wearing This Year

I'm a fashion editor who is acutely aware of how quickly the trend cycle in fashion moves. And with social media, it's expected that trends come and go more quickly than ever. The point is that trends that have longevity can be hard to find but they certainly exist. I tend to spend more on shoes than I do other fashion items, so I'm particularly happy when shoe trends are more than just a flash in the pan.

In all honestly, I don't know that any new summer shoe trends will get as big as some of summer 2019's did. With vacations and basically every other summer activity up in the air this year, and all the time we're spending indoors, shoes aren't exactly as high up on the list as they were last year. But we still need 'em. Based on my Instagram and market research, there are seven existing summer shoe trends, in particular, that are back for a sequel this summer.

Whether you already own them or want to add to your collection, useful information lies ahead. Scroll to shop the trends and see how people are wearing them this year.

This controversial trend has undoubtedly hit the mainstream. Even Prada released a pair of fancy flip-flops (which I want) for summer. If you want to avoid the beachy look, avoid rubber ones and wear them with polished pieces.
Perhaps the biggest shoe trend to come out of the past year, square toes are here to stay. Even though the trend dates back to they '90s, they easily give any summer shoe a more modern feel.
Retro sneakers have eclipsed all other sneakers in popularity, which is great news because they're very easy to wear. Whether you love bright colors or plain white sneakers, there are plenty of options to be had.
Barely there sandals may not offer much in the way of support, but they're as chic as ever. The trend started with strappy heels, but now, there are lots of flat sandals on the market if you want a more casual pair.
Platforms can be polarizing, but they're not going anywhere for the time being. If ultra-high platforms aren't your thing, try mid-height platforms.
Shoes with chains, anklets, and other jewelry-like accents is a micro-trend that continues to bubble. We can thank Bottega Veneta for this.
Sporty sandals by every brand from Teva to Chanel were wholeheartedly embraced last summer, so it's not surprising that they're back again. I, for one, love any shoe trend that's both comfortable and summer-friendly.

Next up, the best pairs of black sandals to buy now.
